Own Education: Ancestral Uses and Customs in the Kogui Community of
Sierra Nevada, Santa Marta-Colombia
Abstract
The problems facing indigenous peoples in Latin America remain a complex and
multidisciplinary challenge, with social, cultural, and economic barriers that hinder their well-
being and existence. The loss of territories and the imposition of models alien to their traditions
affect their development. The purpose of this work is to analyze the education system of the
Kogui indigenous community, its customs, ancestral traditions, and traditional practices, in order
to understand its importance within the Sierra Nevada, Santa Marta, Colombia. The methodology
applied was qualitative, with a documentary design and descriptive scope, based on the search,
analysis, and interpretation of documentary sources. Among the results, it is noteworthy that the
Kogui community has managed to preserve its identity through its own education and traditional
practices, even in the face of external challenges. Their educational system, based on oral
traditions and the leadership of the Mamos, strengthens their autonomy. Despite the State's
educational overreach, they seek to adapt their programs without losing their essence. The
conclusion is that, thanks to their own education and traditions, the Kogui community has
preserved its culture, autonomy, and worldview in the face of various challenges. Their
connection with nature and the transmission of ancestral knowledge have been fundamental to
strengthening their identity and ensuring the continuity of their legacy. This research may be of
interest to ethno-educators and families, as it contributes to safeguarding the ancestral customs of
indigenous ethnic groups.
